Abstract:
This invention presents a method for producing various grades of Nd/Pr ferro alloy by molten salt-electrolysis. Pure iron crucible is used as metal acceptor, cathode is pure iron or mixed rare earth metal melt or eutectic Nd-ferro alloy metal. Anhydrous Nd/Pr carbonate or neodymium oxychloride/praseodymium oxychloride is added to the fluoride-molten salt electrolyte as reactive substance. As a result of their rapid rate of dissolution, high solubility, and being slagless, it is easy to separate the metal from the salt. In this invention fluoride-molten salt-electrolyte can be fully or partially replaced by Nd/Pr fluoride or mixed rare-earth fluoride.
