Abstract:
This invention relates to a process for preparing a masteralloy of Fe and Nd by electrolysis. A mixture containing at least one active oxygen-containing Nd compound is reduced in an electrolytic bath of molten halide by metal (e.g.Fe) cathode and C anode. The electrolytic bath is mainly composed of molten fluorides mixture. Its decomposition potential is close to that of NdF3, or lower. The fluorides include NdF3, MgF2, ScF3, CeF3, LaF3, BaF2, CaF2 and SrF2 and oxide can be dissolved through complexing effect. The reducing solute is mainly composed of the salt mixture of active oxygen-containing Nd compound that can be quickly dissolved in molten electrolyte. The operational temp is 640-1030 deg. C. The current densities of anode and cathode are 0-1.5 A/CM to the power 2 and 2-30 A/cm to the power 2 respectively.
