Abstract:
     In an apparatus for the thermal cracking of hydrocarbons in which a hydrocarbon-containing reaction stream is passed through a tube and is heated to a high temp. by a heat source located outside the tube and is thereby subjected to thermal cracking, the section of said tube in which the temp. of the reaction stream is in the range of from 700 deg.Cto 950 deg.C is made of a bimetallic tube comprising an outer layer made of an austenitic heat-resistant steel having a composition consisting of, by weight, 0.01-0.6% of carbon, 0.1-2.5% of silicon, 0.1-2.0% of manganese, 20-30% of chromium, 18-40% of nickel and 0.01-0.15% of nitrogen, the remainder being iron or iron and from 0.1 to 5.0 of at least one element selected from the group consisting of molybdenum, tungsten and niobium.
