Abstract:
     A process for purification of crude polyether, characterized by bringing a crude polyether obtained by addition polymerization of an active hydrogen compound with an alkylene oxide in the presence of an alkali metal-containing basic catalyst into contact with an adsorbent consisting of a synthetic hydrous magnesium silicate compound satisfying the following requirements (1) to (5) to thereby lower the alkali metal content of the crude polyether: (1) it is represented by the general formula (I): (CaO)x (MgO)y (Al2O3)z SiO2 mH2O ... (I) wherein x, y, z and m satisfy the following relationships respectively: x < y, z < y, 0 <= x <= 0.1, 0.06 <= y <= 0.6, 0 <= z <= 0.1, and 0.1 <= m <= 1.5 (2) it is amorphous as determined by powder X-ray diffractometry, (3) the specific surface area is 100 to 400 m<2>/g as determined by BET absorption method, (4) the alkali metal content is 0.1 % by weight or below, and (5) the mean particle diameter is 2 to 60 mum. According to the invention, purified polyethers little containing alkali metals can be efficiently produced.
