Abstract:
     A process for preparing a 1, 5 -pentanediol derivative of the general formula (I): R1CH2CH = CR2CHO (wherein R1 and R2 represent each independently hydrogen or lower alkyl) by reacting a 2 -butenal derivative of the general formula (II): HOCH2CHR1CH2CHR2CH2OH (wherein R1 and R2 are each as defind above) with formaldehyde and hydrogenating the obtained reaction mixture; a 5, 6 -dihydro- 2H -2 -pyranol derivative of general formula (III), (wherein R1 and R2 are each as defined above); and a process for preparing a 1, 5 -pentanediol derivative of the general formula (II) by hydrogenating this pyranol derivative.
