Abstract:
A method for partially hydrogenating aliphatic dinitriles to the corresponding aminonitriles by means of hydrogen and in the presence of a catalyst selected from a Raney nickel catalyst, a Raney cobalt catalyst, a Raney nickel catalyst comprising a doping element selected from the elements in groups IVb, VIb, VIIb and VIII, and a Raney zinc and cobalt catalyst comprising a doping element selected from the elements in groups IVb, VIb, VIIb and VIII of the periodic table of the elements and zinc, and a strong inorganic base derived from an alkali metal or alkaline-earth metal, wherein the starting hydrogenation medium comprises water in an amount of at least 0.5% by weight based on all the liquid compounds in the medium, diamine and/or aminonitrile capable of being formed from the dinitrile to be hydrogenated, and unconverted dinitrile in an amount of 80 to 99.5% by weight for all three compounds based on all the liquid compounds in the medium; the dinitrile conversion rate is of up to 95%; and said method enables a selectivity for the desired aminonitriles of at least 60% to be achieved.
