Abstract:
Naphthenic acid is proposed as extracting agent, and naphthenic acid-ammonium naphthenate-aliphatic alcohol-kerosine is the extracting organic phase. Yttrium can thus be separated in high purity and high yield by a process of multiple stage fractionating extraction from a chloride solution of mixed rare earths which contain mainly the heavy fraction. The purity of yttrium obtd. by one step extraction can be as high as 99.99% and the direct yield is greater than 98%. A mixed rare earths of low content of yttruim, such as Y2O3 1.2-1.5%, is also obtd. as byproduct.
