Abstract:
This invention concerns a process of preparing aulydrous chlorides of rare earth metals and the metals therefrom by an electrolytic method. Instant dehydration of crystalline hydrated chlorides of rare earth elements are carried out in a high temp. molten salt bath. In the molten salt, the hydrolysis product is successively chlorinated with added carbon, and the molten rare earth chlorides with water insoluble impurities less than 3% is obtd. The molten chloride is then pumped out directly into the electrolytic bath to be electrolyzed. Thus a continueous process of dehydration of rare earth chloride and electrolysis is realized. The electrolytic current efficiency and rare earth yield are both increcsed, while electricity and raw material consumptions are decreased.
